Politics as Fashion (Impeachment Limited Edition)

For the left, politics is a kind of fashion, where certain phrases, ideas, and approaches are either en vogue or outre. There is no absolute truth undergirding their reasoning, nor are there any ironclad alliances (witness the erasing of women, last season’s identity group); all that matters is whatever sticks to the wall this season to get them the power they desire. The Pirate’s Cove has the details on when this line is expected to be retired.

Like the Mueller investigation, a weirdly out-of-touch man heads up another kitchen sink experiment where the investigation was not thorough enough, and the details are left to Trump to chase down, so is impeachment. The Dems have been shown up by a more dapper man at every turn, leaving them with nothing but the Pelosi defense among all their show-trials and secret councils. And on top of all that, the impeachment inquiry is the most poorly-run, dishonest, and secretive facsimile of an orderly legal process the House has yet seen. It is not an official line of clothing, but some back-alley NYC copycat operation. Its designers are either demented or grossly ignorant of the duties that their jobs ask of them. The contrast with the Clinton impeachment could not be starker — the Republicans made all the evidence available, only the Dems could not be bothered to read it. Here, nothing is done justly or in the open, so there is no justice. Nobody in America would want to be the subject of this sort of process.

That the House expects to wrap this up just before the big sales of Thanksgiving or Christmas says it all. It will be a whimper, not a bang, a speed bump, not a stop sign. How could it come to this? It is not just simple incompetence and malice (though those are present in spades), but nervousness. The House Dems desperately want something to stick, although they have nothing, so they need to do this quickly so that it will be “old news” by the time the 2020 elections roll around. That way they can look like they tried but their failure won’t be an albatross around the necks of their candidates.

This is red tofu for the base — something that looks like meat, and vaguely reminds you of meat, but in fact, is something else entirely, and not as satisfying.

I sincerely doubt that they will hold an impeachment vote. If there is a vote, somehow, the Dems will doom it themselves with the red-state reps and senators allowed to vote against along with the GOP, so that we are left with the usual vaporware clothing — the appearance of progress, but no actual change. The House Dems also do not want to give Trump any bounce, and so that is why they must wrap up this sideshow before the end of the year.

Get ready for the markdowns on a set of dishonest Dem candidates for the House and Senate, the same model as last year, but at least you know how they fit. Also check out their shiny new candidates for president — everything that you always wanted and the cost to be borne by other people’s children! Just pull that lever in 2020 and to keep the disaster machine limping along.
